How to Measure Your Kitchen for Cabinets
A wrong measurement can mean a cabinet that doesn't fit the wall, a door that won't swing, or a sink that lands on the wrong pipe. This guide walks you through measuring your kitchen the right way — step by step, with diagrams — so your new cabinets arrive ready to install.
What You'll Need
- Metal tape measure (25 ft+)
- Graph paper or our printable worksheet
- Pencil + eraser
- Step stool / ladder (for ceiling & upper walls)
- Smartphone (photos of every wall + utilities)

Step-by-Step: Measure Your Kitchen
1Sketch a Bird's-Eye Layout
Draft paragraph (skeleton): Draw the room from above on graph paper. Mark every wall, door, window, and any fixed item (range, fridge, sink, vent). Don't worry about perfection — this is your map.
2Measure Wall Lengths
Draft: Measure each wall end-to-end at 36″ height. Walls aren't always square — measure floor-to-floor AND ceiling-to-ceiling and note any difference.
3Mark Doors & Windows
Draft: For each opening, record its width and the distance from the nearest corner to the opening's edge, plus trim/sill depth. Cabinets must clear these.
4Locate Utilities (Most Skipped, Most Costly)
Draft: Mark the center of every plumbing rough-in (sink, dishwasher), gas line, electrical outlet, and the vent/hood chase. Record their height from the floor. Moving these later is expensive — design around what exists.
5Measure Appliances & Existing Cabinets
Draft: If replacing, note the exact width / height / depth of the range, fridge, and current cabinets so the new layout lines up with hookups.
6Plan an Island (Leave Clearance)
Draft: An island needs 42″–48″ of walkway on the working side. Measure the open floor, not just the island footprint.
7Ceiling, Soffits & Obstructions
Draft: Measure ceiling height and any soffit/beam. These decide whether you get full-height wall cabinets or a gap.

Draft: Most cabinets follow standard sizes. Knowing these helps you sanity-check your plan.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring the soffit — you may lose full-height uppers.
- Forgetting appliance specs — a 36″ range needs a 36″ opening, not 35″.
- Wrong outlet height — backsplash outlets sit 18″ above counter.
- No walkway clearance — islands need 42–48″ to feel open.
